When Ed first phoned and __37__(suggested) we play, I1aughed quietly, figuring on an __38__(easy) victory. After all, Ed’s idea of__ 39__ (exercise) has always been nothing more    40   (effort-making) thanlifting a fork to his mouth. __41__(As long as) I can remember, Ed’s been theleast physically fit member in the family, and __42__(strangely) proud ofhimself. His big stomach has always ballooned out between his T-shirt andtrousers.
I was so surprised that I was __47__(speechless). Mycousin must have made an effort to get himself into shape. __48__(As a result),at the point in our game when I’d have predicted the score to be about 9 to 1 in my favor, it was __49__(instead) 7 to 9and Ed was __ 50__ (leading).
made aneffort,get into shape
The homeless make up a growing percentage of America’spopulation. __1__ homelessness has reached such proportions that localgovernment can’t possibly __2__. To help homeless people__3__independence, thefederal government must support job training programs, __4__the minimum wage, and fund more low-cost housing.

And the clerk confirmed that his plane was leaving atnine o’clock three days from that day… Since he was __44__ in three days, Andydidn’t lose anytime.
  44.  B. returning C. staying D. leaving
Many experts believe parents should gently look over thework of younger children and ask them to rethink their __12__.
  A. exercises B. defects C. mistakes D. tests

On Oct. 11, hundreds of runners competed in a cross-country race in Minnesota. Melanie Bailey should have 41 the course earlier than she did. Her 42 came because she was carrying a 43 across the finish line.
As reported by a local newspaper, Bailey was more than two-thirds of the way through her 44 when a runner in front of her began crying in pain. She 45 to help her fellow runner, Danielle Lenoue.

41.D根据前文hundreds of runners competed in a cross-country race可知,Bailey在参加越野比赛,根据下文可知,她是帮助了一位受伤的运动员,should have done表示本应该,所以此处应为她本应该更早一些跑完全程,finished完成,因此应选D。
42.A根据上文的should have finished the cause earlier than she did,可知Bailey耽搁了比赛,delay耽搁,因此应选A。
43.D根据本句中的across the finish line通过终点线,根据第二段的to help her fellow runner中的runner赛跑的人,可知Lenoue也是越野赛选手。
44.A根据第一段的hundreds of runners competed in a cross-country race及第二段的Bailey was more than two-thirds of the way through可知,Bailey已经跑了比赛全程的三分之二以上。
45.C根据下文的to help her fellow runner可知,Bailey停了下来帮助和她一起参赛的选手。stop to do sth停下来做某事 stop doing停止做某事。
46.B根据本句中的took her arm to see可知,Bailey是搀着Lenoue的胳膊,想看看能否帮她往前走。
47.D根据下文的let Lenoue climb onto her back可推知,Bailey应该是弯下腰让Lenoue趴到自己背上。 A. went away离开B. stood up站起来C. stepped aside让路。
49.B根据上文的Once there和下文的and later taken to a hospital可知,在那里,医生对Lenoue的身体状况进行了检查评估,看伤情如何,然后将她送往医院。
50.B根据前文where she learned that she had serious injuries in one of her knees.
I feel like I was just doing the right thing.
53.A根据上文的She was just crying.
